We are looking for an accomplished, creative, and dynamic Postdoctoral Appointee with a positive attitude and excellent collaboration skills to join our research team. We need you to bring a strong track record in design and analysis of optimization methods for large-scale energy systems. You will utilize your experience in performing algorithm development and computational studies. Ideally you will work towards the development of scalable optimization algorithms and apply the advanced solution methods for power systems operations along with dynamic team members and research partners. We use state-of-the-art technology to work on solutions in the national interest.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
Develop advanced algorithms using state-of-the-art mathematics in optimization and control theory;
Build and support computer modeling tools; and setting up and executing simulation and analytical programs using simulation software;
Use advanced engineering or operations research techniques to support analytically-based decision-making and prototyping focused on energy market and reliability systems and activities;
Manage collection and pre-processing of energy market or infrastructure data, and support accurate analysis and post-process of results for results reporting;
Document results clearly and concisely, including presenting data in graphs and charts, describing approaches used to derive results, and interpreting the results.
The Electric Power Systems Research Department conducts R&D and advanced analytics to enable the modernization of the nation's electric power grid. This work includes developing improved planning and operations methodologies from the bulk system down to end users. Our capabilities encompass the development and application of advanced algorithmic and computational methods, grid operations, economics, and policy. Examples of specific core areas include power system dynamics, operational reliability, advanced renewables integration, electricity market development, smart grid technologies and related information analysis, optimal resource expansion, and computationally based decision support. This department is highly inter-disciplinary, working collaboratively with universities, utilities, government agencies, and both national and international research organizations.

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
PhD in Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Programming, Economics or related technical field.
Experience working with data analysis, computer programs, and research in an academic or professional setting;
Experience with stochastic optimization and portfolio optimization related to energy systems;
Specific training, certification and experience within any of the following: advanced training in energy markets, operations research or economic theories and practices preferred.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
