Position Description: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track faculty position in mathematics with principal duties to include research, teaching, and service. The primary focus of this position is in operations research. The ideal candidate will show evidence of being able to teach a graduate mathematics sequence in operations research, and will show potential for excellence in research in operations research, mathematics, statistics or some other field closely related to operations research. This individual will become an integral member of a diversified and active team of mathematics and statistics faculty supporting the Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics, the Master’s degree in Statistics, the Master’s degree in Data Science, and the Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics.
Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include maintaining a strong research program in the area of operations research or some closely related area, and developing sources of external research funding and graduate mathematics or statistics student support. Teaching duties will include teaching one to two courses per semester in operations research and related areas, and advising undergraduate and graduate student projects and research. Additionally, all faculty are expected to contribute to the effective operation of the institution through service work in the form of committees and task force groups, and to actively participate in professional/technical societies. As part of the university mission it is expected that the faculty member perform outreach, support, and service, in operations research; to other campus departments, South Dakota, the region; the nation; and the world in a socially responsible manner.
Required qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in Operations Research, Mathematics, or closely related field by the starting date of employment; demonstrated effective teaching abilities; evidence of the ability to teach operations research; demonstrated effective research abilities; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills.
Desired qualifications include demonstrated ability to apply operations research techniques in a variety of settings, and demonstrated ability to interact with the private sector through operations research techniques application
The Department: The Department of Mathematics & Statistics currently has 22 tenure-track faculty, 12 full time instructors, 70 graduate students, and 110 undergraduate majors. The department currently offers a B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics, an M.S. in Statistics, an M.S. in Data Science, and a Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics.
